So this stupid wordpress update has been sitting on my dashboard, taunting me to update my site for the past week. I, being the sissy that I am, put it off because I am afraid I will fuck everything up. Today, I decide to man up and just upgrade.
What do I do?
Completely fuck everything up. I have to delete wordpress from my server and re-install it. Luckily, I had saved my posts, comments and all of that in an XML file thingy, but my theme, plugins, widgets and all that…GONE. I’ve been scrambling to get everything somewhat back to how it was. I can’t believe I almost lost my whole blog.
Oh, when I reinstalled wordpress, of course, I did not install the newest one. I’m still stuck with the one I had before I messed everything up.
I’m never trying to update wordpress again.
I will have version 2.3.1 for the rest of my life.
Forever.
EDIT
I got everything back up but now my entries are showing up as old in feed readers. So it seems like I haven’t updated but really my new entries are all marked with December publishing dates.Â
I DON’T KNOW HOW TO FIX IT AND IT IS MAKING ME CRAZY.

boooooooo mandatory blog updates suck at life. I was so SO confused when I had to switch from HTML-based Blogger to XML-based Blogger. Don’t they know not everyone’s a computer genius?
If it makes you feel any better, your site looks fine! :)
Yikes! Stuff like that is so scary. I read some blogs where people routinely DELETE BY CHOICE. Which, blows my mind. My archives… well without them how would I ever be able to look back and know what I was complaining about in April 2007? People are far more brave than I when it comes to letting go of the blog. I’m glad you got your stuff back. I’m going to go look at my archives now, just to reassure myself that everything is still there.
Site looks damn good, glad it didn’t mess everything up. I was considering moving over to Wordpress too, I think I’ll stick with blogger now, seems simpler (or for the more simple, like myself).
i feel your pain. I suck at any type of tech stuff.
…it’s a wonder I can even type.
Phew! Close one! I’m glad you didn’t lose everything. That would have SUCKED. HARD.
I don’t understand about half the words in that post, but your blog looks good and I can see the comment window okay, so you must be good!
Simon - Wordpress is great. I definitely recommend making the switch. The only reason I had problems is because I self host wordpress on my own site. I shouldn’t have tried to fix it all on my own!
I feel your pain. I’m a fairly techie person and I still hate updating Wordpress. I’ve seriously thought about switching to a hosted blog just because I hate having to keep up with all these updates myself.
ahhh i would have freaked out!! glad you saved all your posts!
Just thinking about it freaks me out. Good luck!
that’s so funny, i picked this weekend to finally update my blog template too! time passes by WAY too quick when you’re pretending you know html..
Thanks for the comment you left on my blog. Not that I’m glad you had trouble… but it’s nice to know I’m not the only one. :)
