That’s Edie and I trying to take a photobooth picture on my MacBook and me making a face trying to get away from her. She likes trying to bite my hair. Edie in action and Jamie cringing.
Later today, I am driving to Petsmart and signing pupperoo up for puppy kindergarten. She definitely needs some formal training. I’ve been working really hard with her on the biting and nipping thing. I know a lot of it is just her being a puppy, but I want to break her out of it. My hands and arms can’t take it anymore!
Edie has two different kinds of nips. One is the superexcitedplayyippiehooray! nip and the other is the, what I call “niiiice” nip. The second is when she takes my finger and is very gentle, it’s kind of like she is lightly chewing and then tries to lick me at the same time. I let her do that, because she really understands that she is being gentle and “niiice”. The first nip is the one that hurts and tears up my hands. I’ve tried a sharp “NO!”, I’ve tried redirecting her to one of her many toys, I’ve tried holding her (kind of like a headlock, but not) until she calms down or even hold her muzzle and tell her “no!”. I never hit her or tap her on the nose or anything like that. Sometimes she gets it and will stop. Sometimes she just has bad days where it’s all she wants to do.
I know I can’t expect her to learn everything super fast. She is only 12 weeks old, but this seems like something that shouldn’t take this long. I’m hoping puppy kindergarten will help with not only that, but socialize her and help me work with her on other behaviors. I’ve had dogs all my life, I have just never had one as a puppy this young so it is definitely a learning experience for us both.
Monday, Edie had her second visit to the vet. Everyone at the vet had never seen a Corgi puppy before and they would all grab her and love on her. I’m surprised they let me leave with her! Anyway, the first was a puppy wellness check, to make sure she is healthy. Monday she got her distemper vaccine. I was a little worried because yesterday when I left for work, she wasn’t her normal self and my sister told me she wasn’t really all day. She was very sluggish, slept a lot and very cuddly. Normally with Edie it is always GO! GO! GO! until she wears herself out and collapses for a nap a few times a day. I’m hoping she is better today or I am going to call the vet. Maybe it is a side effect of the shot? I’m trying not to worry though.
There is my Edie update! I love my little pup, puppy bites and all.

Don’t despair, it is definitely a side effect from the shots. My dog crashed completely after her shots, so much so that that vet always wants to break it up and do her shots over a couple of weeks.
Good luck at puppy kindergarten, it will be such a fun learning experience for the both of you.
You’re such a good mom to Edie!
I want a puppy! SO BAD!
Be careful with Edie. Someone across the Illinois/Indiana state line just might make a trip to snatch her!! :-)
Yay for little puppy bites! This is probably not what you want to hear? But the best way to train a puppy is to have two other puppies that do it for you. I swear to god, I never knew it was going to be as easy as it is with my newest pup!
All the puppy updates make me want a puppy. Right now. But, the building I’m in doesn’t allow pets. Siiiigh. I’ll just have to make do with all your adorable photos!
Edie sounds like she’s bringing lots of joy to your life! In addition to puppy kindergarten, you should definitely begin watching the Dog Whisperer on the National Geographic channel. Sweets and I have learned more about our dog through that show than any trainer could ever tell us.
I think Louie needs a kitty training class. He does similarly with the biting. He does the playing “OMG I AM GETTING ATTENTION THIS IS FABULOUS” biting, which is usually super hard and draws blood. The he does a “you are petting me but I still want to be playful so i’m going to gently nibble on you and then lick you because as if I’m taking it back”. My arms and hands are always all bitten up!!!!
PetSmart training is only good if the trainer is good. I suggest watching each trainer in action before signing Edie up. You want to make sure the trainer you get will work with Edie the way you want them to. Some trainers believe in a disciplinary approach while others believe in a rewards system. Some believe in special collars and some just let it be with what you have. :)
Maybe I WON’T get a puppy. It seems like a TON of work - like raising a kid! However, that adorableness seems sooo worth it!
Damn, she is cute. You so lucky!
You’ll have so much fun at obedience class. Edie will really get into it and it’ll become a great game for you both. Just having people there to instruct you on how best to manage the whole experience is absolutely worth it. Calvin LOVES going to class because he gets doted on by everyone for being the big dog in a little dog’s body. Have you gotten on to clicker training yet? It has worked wonders on our end!
Puppy kindergarten, that’s cute fierce! You have incredible patience to be a nanny AND raise a puppy :)
Yay for ANTM & Top Chef tonight!
puppybites!
yea, you’ve got like a permanent baby on your hands. good thing she’s so adorable!
So cute. It almost sounds like you’re talking about a baby here though. She’s a doll and deserves all that attention. Pretty girl.
I went through the same thing with you as nipping. Pancake was the SUPER NIPPING WORLD CHAMPION. I don’t have anything to say in terms of advice because a.) it sounds like you are doing everything right, and b.) who wants unsolicited doggie advice anyway :-) but I will offer you some encouragement: keep going! It does stop!
I think the nipping thing was so frustrating for me because unlike most training things where I could see progress day-to-day or even minute-to-minute, the progress here was more like month-to-month. It seemed impossible that after getting his muzzle grabbed upwards of 50 times a day, Pancake would STILL not get the point. But something was definitely going on, because around 6 months he stopped the ouchie kind of nipping altogether. I think he just at the age before he was able to realize he was about to do it, and by then the understanding was there that he should stop himself.
this made me miss baby boy B so, so, much. and now? now he’s being taken care of by my parents. and has taken my place as their child.
le sigh.
i think the distemper shot did something similar to Ellie. If she’s not better in 24 hours call the vet and they’ll tell you if it’s not normal.
<3 your edie updates!
haha, i’ve never had a dog and the idea of puppy kindergarten just sounds so funny, yet completely helpful at the same time. good luck!
Lucy’s distemper shot did the same thing to her. Like Heidi, I’d recommend a vet if she’s not feeling better after 24 hours. Lucy got diarrhea before she got better.
Good luck with puppy kindergarten! It’s usually a good thing — my mom’s dog, who is a lot like Edie in the respect that she liked to nip a lot, has gotten a LOT better since she went to the training school. And it’s good for you to be there with her, too!
you’re frontrunning all my puppy concerns, so THANKS.
i will say we had a young corgi, and he was really mouthy when he was young. it totally went away.
Puppy school is a great idea - I’ll be doing the same thing when I get home & get my pups.
It is just the shot, never fear all she needs is some love and cuddles. Try to enjoy the down time. She will be back to herself in a matter of a few days!
Feel better Edie!
I really love that her name is EDIE.
I lurve your puppy. ADORABLE!!
Also like the design you have on your page :)
My Shih-Tzu puppy was a biter, too. The only thing that worked was spraying her face with water whenever she did it.
Your background is so cute! Thanks for your comment! I told AP that mabye the Marc Jacobs shoes should become traveling shoes so everyone can wear them. : )
Oh, Love the new layout!
And Wal was my first puppy too. I’d always had dogs, but never a puppy. And I made a tonne of mistakes with him as a puppy that we’re still paying for now. Meh. Who needs skin? He never went to puppy school, either, so he still hates other dogs and things.
It’s his birthday today. He’s three. We’ve had the “now you’re a grown up, you have to act like a grown up” talk… he was far too defiant.
“She likes trying to bite my hair.” Too funny.
Good luck with puppy kindergarten!
awww how cute!
love the new layout!
yes my bag is the Miu Miu bow bag :)
I remember when I first got my puppy (he’s 3 now) but I used to freak from every little change. I was always at the vet. They should have reserved me a parking space. But I learned it is usually nothing. I’m sure it is the shot that has got Edie down. I know I hate shots! What a cute little corgi! Feel better.
By the way I did those Petsmart puppy classes and they sucked! Maybe it was just my instructor but I eventually got my money back.
I love your little pup. SO CUTE. Your expression is priceless.
Try the MEEP! The super high pitched noise that will sound like one of her litter mates. Then immediately turn away from her. Refuse her your attention. Its ingrained in them, she wants your love. I didn’t believe it either, but after trying it a few times with my puppy, it really did work. And my hands are not bloody anymore!
looking fabulous! I want to do spring cleaning on my blog layout now :)
