When I was younger my family would occasionally go on vacations- more like “vacation”. I was probably about 7 or 8 years old, still young enough not to know we weren’t really going on vacation. My mother was never a fan of the Mouse so automatically that was ruled out. My dad doesn’t like to fly because of his anxiety. When you live in the Midwest, have 3 children and don’t like to fly, vacations are kind of hard to do. Of course, we hit up The Dells every now and then and that was always fun. We’d also go camping, but that is another entry in itself. Trust me.
My parents favorite thing to do was pack up the car for a weekend and drive to some random place, like LaPorte, IN and we’d shack up for the weekend at a Holiday Inn. Ta da! Vacation! Of course at 7 years old, I thought this was the coolest thing ever. We’d get to hang out in a hotel room! Room service! Gift shop! Game room?! No way! And OMG a pool!
I remember wandering in the hotel gift shop thinking everything was so amazing. Rubber stamp sets? I needed them! I never got my rubber stamp set. The other thing I remember, was this little pewter treasure chest that had a necklace inside. I needed that necklace so bad. It was my souvenir. You would think after taking me to hotel in boofoo Indiana and telling me it’s vacation, I’d at least get some rubber stamps out of the deal!
After swimming, eating free continental breakfast and playing pinball to my little heart’s content we’d head home. Back to south Chicago. I know better now, but then my fake vacations were pretty cool.
I finally got to Disney World at 22 years old and again the year after, I’ll be making another trip there in June. It really is my favorite place in the world. I have San Francisco in July for BlogHer and then hopefully rounding out the year with another trip to Vegas in the fall.
What vacations do you have planned for the year? Fake or real.
Will you bring me some rubber stamps as a souvenir?

The first eight years of my life taught me that vacations meant driving three hours to camp out in the woods, fear being eaten by bears, and pretending that hurricane winds are perfectly fine for camping in flimsy tents.
Since we didn’t die, we ended up traveling throughout all of Europe to make up for the years of swatting bugs and smelling log fires.
:) We’re probably going to head out to Disney World too. We really haven’t mapped out any solid plans for FL but my boyfriend has never been so we have to go! The other half of the time I hope to be on the beach over in Tampa. Maybe we’ll run into each other? I’m going the last week of June though. it’ll be hot!!
i have a huge rubber stamp collection! seriously. i was all about them when i was younger, embossing the stamps, making stationary. love it.
this year vacation wise i think i am going to mexico or some sort of wonderful beach this summer with my family. we haven’t done a family vaca in over three years so it is totally due. can’t wait.
I was lucky to go on “real” vacations with my fam. Being that I just got back from Israel, a big trip is out of the question for awhile. But Dave and I are planning on Vermont in June or so, to go to the Ben & Jerrys factory, and the Magic Hat Brewery. Yeah our trip revolves around food and beer. :)
I’ve still never been to Disney World. My hubby and I keep saying we need to go, but we haven’t made it yet.
My childhood vacations usually consisted of family reunions or hockey trips. Now they mean going to FL with the in-laws. Jury is still out on whether that is really a vacation.
chicago
austin
seattle
london
those are all planned…we’ll see which ones I get to!
Indiana for a wedding (uh, not really a vacation).
Paris and London next year (saving up all my money for that).
We didn’t do vacations often when I was a kid. I remember 2 or 3 that weren’t visits to friends or family in disguise. But really? Anything that involved a hotel and pool was awesome in my book!
We normally go to the beach every year with a group of friends. That tradition has died this year (long trauma filled story) and I’ll be a whale by June anyway. With a new baby and a toddler, I imagine my 2 days in the hospital after giving birth will me my vacation this year. How sad is that?
I love the idea of “fake vacations”- because seriously, as a kid, all I needed was a big ol’ bed to jump on and maybe a pool. Since I am fresh from a weekend away, I am all for the weekend getaways, even for a night. Totally rejuvenating. Though I do not want to deal with reality. One of the drawbacks I suppose.
I’m traveling to CA for BlogHer and an extended stay in July to see my friends and sit on the beach. I hope to get to some of the San Juan islands and see the peninsula in WA soon. I’d love to get to Canada too.
Oh, the Dells! Duck tours, Corny Maze and my personal favorite, the Tommy Bartlett water show:)
i’m headed to north carolina in a week, philly in june, northern california at the end of august and maybe ohio in november. but i feel like (or secretly hope) that some other vacation opportunities present themselves in there somewhere too.
I sooooo wanna go to BlogHer! I’m in the middle of trying to negotiate all my vacation time off of work, so I don’t know yet where I’m headed to. But it will be good, no doubt.
My family did the fake vacation thing too. Driving through the Blue Ridge Parkway (NOT a vacation), stopping at antique shops and counting motorcycles and cows.
I finally got to go to Disney World my senior year of high school, and I absolutely loved it.
And right now, I can’t actually plan trips anywhere because about a kajillion people are getting married (actually close by), so I’ll be driving about 3 hours every weekend to do that (starting mid-May). At least those are good fake, mini vacays, too.
I didn’t get to Disney until I was 14, when it was clear I wouldn’t throw tantrums at that park ;)
We are headed up north Michigan this weekend and another weekend in May and maybe Ft. Myers during Thanksgiving (hurricane season!)
I’m jealous of your trips! :)
My family went to Disney World once when I was two years old…I haven’t been back since! So sad!
As a kid my family vacations were to Cleveland or Pittsburgh (I live about 2 hours from both). While my grandma went to have treatments at one of the city hospitals my mom would go with her and my dad would take my brother & me to the kids science museum, history museum, etc. My other vaca was to DC, for my uncle’s military burial. Wow, this sounds really depressing, but in reality, we didn’t really know the difference. We had fun, got to jump on hotel beds and go to the pool, so we had a blast!
In better news, I’m going on a cruise to Mexico the week before classes start! :D With my boyfriends entire family (like 30 some people) : / But it’s a cruise! I have to have fun, right?!
This year is a good year for me in terms of vacations. My fiance and I have already spent a long weekend in Boston visiting friends and family. We are planning a weekend in New York to see my brother. I will spend a week on Cape Cod with my family (and my fiance will join us there for a weekend). And after our Chicago wedding, my fiance and I will honeymoon in Costa Rica (we are finalizing plans this week).
I have ZERO vacations planned, but I hear you on the rubber stamps. When I was little, I wanted the rubber stamps sooo bad, but they never, EVER had my name. On the rare occassion that they did have my name, it was spelled “Devin” and was blue. I hated the rubber stamp companies so hard.
One magical christmas, my parents shelled out $5.95 + shipping and tax to get me a ballet slipper rubber stamp with my name spelled correctly on it. It might have been the single, best present I have ever gotten. My parents immediately regretted this decision when Devon Ballarina slipper stamp prints showed up in every book and on every sheet of spare paper in our house.
I can’t help it. I love to see my name in ink!
Thanks for bringing back this totally random memory. You’ll never get these moments of your life back. :)
Childhood vacations were the best. Mine were from NY to Penn. I always wanted stuffed animals of ducks, but never got them. So sad.
It’s funny, even though I’ve lived in Orlando for the past 12 years, I haven’t been to Disney that often (too pricey). Even so, every time I go I still love it. It brings on the child in you.
Have fun here in June, but watch out for the heat! I suggest Epcot, even though it’s not nearly as popular as the others.
As for me, i’m going to Vegas for a friend’s birthday and DC to visit family. I’ve never been to either place, so i’m really excited.
my parents used to take vacations to where ever my dad was working - seaside heights, nj, Bath, ME, and Harrisburg, PA are among the few. We also had a timeshare in Cape Cod which was my favorite. Going to cape cod in april though? Not so much fun I later learned.
This year? Boyfriend and I are trying to save up for a vacation to somewhere tropical - bermuda, US Virgin Islands…or something of the like. I don’t have any major trips planned but i do have a wedding shower in NYC in May, CT in May for boyfriend’s lil sis’s graduation, CT in July for a wedding, Boston in June for a wedding, and hopefully VT in July for a family reunion.
Not to mention where ever we end up driving for my triathlon at the end of summer :)
All of these constitute as fake vacas no?
I can’t believe they never got you a rubber stamp set. How rude. And that sounds exactly like what my family used to do for vacations :)
We are going to London and Germany next week! And then our honeymoon to the Dominican Republic in November!
And that’s all. Because I am at the limit of my vacation days as it is. So, looks like it’ll be a summer in the city…
I really, really want to plan a girls trip to Disney, but all my friends are singing the same song: I’m married now and I have to save money/go on vacation with my husband/buy a house/have a child. Stupid married people.
I am going to Portland, Maine, and probably Rosemont, Ill., this summer for work. Later this month I’m going to a baby shower in Pittsburgh and probably again in May for my sister’s 21st birthday. Whee!
Disney World! Gotta come out to the west side to experience Disney LAND, girl!
You know, girlie, I could just drive to LaPorte for you and grab some rubber stamps. It’s not THAT far away! ha ha ha ha.
;)
I’m glad that you are feeling better, btw!
I lucked out as a kid. My parents had an RV for the first 8yrs of my life, and we’d drive to state parks across the US.
Vacation Plans: I leave for Vegas in 3 DAYS!!!! All the girls I studied abroad with in London 2 yrs ago are flying there for a weekend of ridiculousness! psyched!
We spent a lot of time in the middle of nowhere Tennessee camping. And even more time in the car driving between Memphis and West Virginia and Pennsylvania to visit my parents families.
I’d like to visit Seattle and Chicago since I’ve never been to either city. But as of now, I don’t know where I will be after May, so there are no definite plans yet.
Just got back from vacation today (Turks and Caicos). Hopefully going to Mexico in August. Also going to BlogHer, and Seattle to visit a friend with a new baby. And possibly California for a wedding in September.
Travel is pretty much my favorite thing ever. I just got back from the Grand Canyon and am headed to Vegas the first weekend in May. I really want to plan a trip to Vancouver, ooo and a cruise!
My mom would get a hotel room for the weekend, usually in some part of Illinois, and call it our vacation. I thought it was so awesome to be on a bed bigger than a twin. The pool was what really sold me. You could bring me down the street and I’d be happy, as long as it had a pool.
I’m going to SF this summer. But you already knew that. Other than that…I don’t think I have any other trips planned unless the bf stops being a poo face and I end up in ATL.
I think we’re planning a lame vacation down to Champaign sometime in the summer, and probably many day trips to the city too.
Next January, though, my dad and step-mom are taking all 6 kids plus spouses and grandchildren on a cruise!!!!
Oh man, Jamie, I can’t believe your parents would take you to LaPorte. That. is. hysterical. Yeaaaah, northern Indiana!! Represent!!
No planned vacations on the docket. Kind of a sad realization, nothing to look forward to. But I plan on moving away from northern Indiana by August, so that’s kind of a permanent vacation, right?
The fam’s planning a trip to Canada and Ohio this year. I’ve got my fingers crossed for the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame!
my family was the same as yours. we lived in mn so our “vacations” were to wisconsin dells or the u.p. to visit family. i didn’t go on my first plane ride until i was a senior in high school. now i fly about three times a year.
i’ve already been to arizona once this year and the dominican republic. i’m going to az again in 10 days and will probably make a trip to chicago this summer. and of course, up to the cabin a few times!
i love little weekend trips that are relaxing and free from stress!
Fake vacations are such a genius idea for parents of little kids! Cheap hotel rooms in the middle of nowhere, no cooking and new forms of entertainment for the little ones.
This year, I have a list of 5 places I’d like to visit - San Francisco, Cairo, London, Colorado, and Belize - but I think I’m going to have to choose one. And I’m guessing it will be either San Fran or London, seeing as how I’ve got free places to stay in both locations.
Disney is SO FUN! I went there last year with Mark and this year with my dad. ENJOY!
Maxie just told me about a Chicago trip and hopefully you’ll be there! I want to meet your fabulous ass self. And I will TOTALLY bring rubber stamps :)
My vacation at the home opener was nice ;)
Oooh, I can’t wait to go on a vacation again. The past couple of years I’ve gotten to go to Japan, but next year if it’s completed, I really want to go to Universal Studios to see the Hogwarts section and the rest of the park. I really enjoy Universal. Then maybe the next year do Disney or something. Since my husband has been in the military we haven’t really been in the same country let alone zip code, so vacations have kind of been reserved for traveling to where the other person is. It will nice to actually go somewhere together and enjoy it and have a real vacation :)
My dad loves travelling; my first vacation was to Brazil when I was 3. I actually still remember bits of it. :) This year I don’t really have any more vacation plans; possibly Taiwan at some point (SUCH good food there) and maybe another South East Asian resort, Thailand or the Philippines or something, although I’m not counting on it (am saving money for my move!)
After moving to NYC in Sept, the family is planning a trip to Europe (London, Portugal, Spain and France) so that’s really the only trip that is a little more definite than the others! :)
Have fun in SF! I love SF (was born there and lived there till I was 7) And have fun in Vegas too, I need to go back at some point after I’ve moved! :)
It is amazing how you can be tricked so readily as a child, hey?
I thought gift shops were divine!
My holiday this summer? Oh, this little place called Chicago. Maybe you’ve heard of it? ;)
OoooOO.. I’m excited! I’m off to the USofA this year! For five lovely weeks, with the lovely Miss Alyndabear. And we get to see a HEAP of it.
It’s 18 weeks today until I fly out of Sydneytown and into LA. I’m upset though, because I don’t get to see SanFran. I’d love to see it.
I’m toying with the idea of a visit to the UK, too.. depending on how far my finances stretch.
Are you SURE you aren’t one of my children? We took those same “vacations ” when my children were small except we went to really really cool places like Terre Haute, IN.
My parents used to take us on some decent vacations. We went to Florida once, but omg the traveling. We took the train there and drove back. That part was a nightmare, but we did get to go to Disney World! That was really the only REAL vacation we went on.
I’m going to NYC next month — and my boyfriend and I are probably going to California at some point. We’ll have to wait and see.
i love “vacations” - fake, real, or otherwise. usually my vacation is going to pittsburgh to visit a friend [about 2hrs from me] and staying with her…not really a “vacation” though, but i may take a vaca day! also plans for this year are: cleveland in may, possibly florida in may to visit a friend, really dying to go to NY this year, but don’t know, Chicago! is a possibility for work - for our “trade show” in june [but i dont think its going to happen very sad...], possibly virginia to visit another friend, and some trip with my 4 best girlfriends [this could be NY if we can all go, this may end up being VA to visit the one friend]. we’ll see. i don’t really care where it is, if i can take a weekend and get out of my house, even if it is to stay at some cheap hotel and just sample some local food, i’ll do it!
