vegas, baby!

This weekend I’ll be living it up in Sin City. I’ve been itching to get back there since the first time I went in December, I was really sick and didn’t get to do it up right. Come Saturday, I plan on being well and so far from sicky that I will bathe in orange juice and live in a bubble until I step foot on that airplane if need be. A weekend vacation could not be any more needed right now!

Of course this means, last minute Vegas preparations because I can’t go there looking like a hot mess. This means a haircut is in order. If you have been reading this blog long enough, you know what a big sissy I am when it comes to my hair. I HATE haircuts and will let it grow out for over 6 months before I’ll go get a trim and I wait until the very last minute to see if I can get an appointment. Hopefully today when I call, my stylist and hair guru, Mary, can fit me in on Friday. Also, since I’m bringing in boyfriend to get his haircut, I hope I get a sweet discount for referring him!

I briefly asked this on twitter yesterday but since more of you read this than my twitter I’ll pose the question here as well.

What are must do/see/eats in Vegas?

GO!

P.S. Umm…Now What? is looking for guest posters.
P.P.S. I’m talking about 5 1/2 inch heel-less boots over at Rone Break. Fashion forward or fashion flop?
P.P.P.S. This girl is in need of a new hair straightener. If you enter this contest, I hope you give it to me if you win!

Instead of recommending a must do, can I recommend a must not do? I went to the Tournament of Kings at the Excalibur because it was the 1 thing my fella wanted to do. It was expensive. The food was disgusting. The show was boring. It was a wasted evening.

I live here, so here is the deal, its expensive to try and get into clubs…If you walk around the strip during the day or early evening promoters might stop you and give you free passes to clubs. Now, this doesnt mean that you will get in quickly if they write your name on a list, you may still have to wait, but you wont have to pay…which in some cases is a good 20 to 30 bucks.
If you dont want to wait for the clubs (they arent that great anyway) hit up the bars in the middle of the casinos. Those are usually fun. There are good ones at Mandalay Bay and Planet Hollywood.
If you like sushi, i just went to Koi in Planet Hollywood the other weekend, its a bit pricey, but soooo goooood!.
Have fun and dont go home with strangers.
Oh, there is a good outlet mall on Charleston called Premium Outlet mall (if you like that sort of thing during the day) and there is a good shopping strip mall (with a H&M) on the south side of the strip called Town Square.

Thank you! I’m going to Vegas in 2 weeks, I’ll be keeping my eye out for what everyone has to say.

The thing that I enjoyed most when I was in Vegas, truly the highlight, was the boozy slushees at Fat Tuesday, inside the MGM. I vaguely remember adding a test-tube shot of everclear for something like 99 cents, and it made my late afternoon/evening. Now, when I am at the gym with the (woohoo!) reusable, 80’s-neoprene-covered water bottle it came in, I can look back fondly on one of my favorite adult beverage experiences.

You must see the fountains at the Bellagio. That is really my only MUST. Other than that enjoy the sun at the pools during the day and party at night.

When I went to Vegas last year we went to go see Ka one of the Cirque du Soleil shows—was incredible btw especially with my 32 oz margarita! so if you can go to one of their shows, you won’t be disappointed! We went to a Sushi buffet, I think it was like 17 dollars, but if you like sushi, it’s awesome! Clubs that I liked if you’re one to do that…. Studio 54 (MGM), Rain, Playboy club–if you like to gamble, Ghost (the last three are in the Palms), Coyote Ugly in the NY NY wasn’t all it was cut out to be (maybe it was the night I went). Also, went shopping at Macy’s because I don’t have a Macy’s where I live, shopped in the Wynn, and went to the mall… All really fun things to do if you don’t have a lot different stores where you live! Besides that… we drank from the time we got up to the time we went to sleep and had a blast!! Have fun, I’m so jealous!!

Definitely should try Mon Ami Gabi at the Paris. It’s a little expensive, but the food is fabulous and the service is great. Since the weather is nice, you can enjoy their patio which is right off the strip and great for freaky people watching. Make sure you try the Pommes Frites with the Balsamic Reduction/Chive Oil. Oh god, I’m hungry.

If you’re looking to go clubbing, a lot of the cab drivers will hock out complimentary passes to clubs – nothing VIP but free entry will save you a bit of money. You can also buy a crapload of these passes from people on Ebay if you have time for about 5 bucks. I recommend Rain at the Palms or Pure at Caesar’s, even though it gets really crowded, because it’s just a really fun vibe.

For things NOT to do: RA at the Luxor sucks big time. The Excalibur buffet also sucks, and so does the buffet in Caesar’s (can’t remember what it’s called). Don’t take a night cab down the strip because you’ll get stuck in traffic forever! If you have a bigger group of people, split a limo – it’s like, $60 bucks flat rate no matter how much traffic you get stuck in. And for heaven’s sake, stay away from Dre’s. Please…just stay away.

yay for vegas. i say you just stay up all night, check out the bellagio at some point, play the penny slots, they’re so fun and you get free drinks. go anywhere where there is a live band, they’re awesome. and yeah that’s all i got. have a great time!

I’ve been to Vegas a few times, and seriously all the free stuff is pretty cool. I LOVE watching the Bellagio fountains… most of the hotels have some sort of free something or other to watch that can be pretty neat.

My favorite hotels to explore were The Venetian, Mirage, and the MGM. They all have neat little attractions and great shopping. If you like roller coasters, pay the $10 to ride the one on the NY NY hotel… super fun… and I think you get a discount to ride it a second time if you want.

There is a REALLY cool swanky bar at the top of Mandalay Bay.. you can see the strip from up there and it’s neat if you want somewhere cool and not clubby to hang out for a bit.

Never been but have loads of fun! :)

If you happen to be at a roulette table…

put a dollar on black 24 for me, would ya?

[Reply]

I love every restaurant in The Venetian, especially San Marco. I’m not at ALL a club-ey/”scene” person, so I don’t know how to advise you on that stuff. For me, Vegas was great in that we just drank by the pool and wandered through the hotels taking ridiculous pictures.

[Reply]

I like the piano bar in NY NY, but I pretty much love ALL piano bars. =)

Mmmm…eat a late-night sweet crepe in the Paris. Cheap and delicious.

[Reply]

first of all very, very jealous. I love everything about vegas, and I have only been there once. Across from the Bellagio there is a Hotel its either Paris or the Venetician. Inside that hotel is a french restaurant on a patio and the escargo and wine list are too die for. Have fun

[Reply]

Mirage and Venetian were my favorite casino/hotels. Definitely see the Fountain show at the Bellagio, go wander Wynn because it’s gorgeous, there is a restaurant in the Grand canal shoppes, Cannonita, it’s really good and not terribly expensive and it’s got a patio that’s right against the canal. Fat Tuesdays is also really yummy, try the mudslide.

[Reply]

i love vegas! i’m so jealous… last time i went we spent most of our time at the monte carlo (the boyfriend is addicted to craps!), because it had $5 craps tables! and blackjack! mgm has good tabls too usually… everywhere gets a little pricey, for me at least. i can only gamble when i don’t cry after losing!

[Reply]

Go to Tao! It’s awesome. I saw Paris Hilton there when I went in June.

And order the nachos at Jimmy Buffet’s Margaritaville. So. Freaking. Delicious.

[Reply]

My only suggestion is to win a lot of money, don’t count cards and stay away from ladies of the night.

[Reply]

I have no ideas of what the must sees are in Vegas despite the fact that I work for a company that does tours there. All I do when I’m there is sit by the pool with a drink in hand at all times.

[Reply]

Have fun…Vegas is my favorite city to vacation.

[Reply]

I ditto the fountains… I love how they go with the music. Hmm.. other than that… I love the outlet shopping (hello Coach!) and there’s a fantastic margarita joint in the mall attached to Planet Hollywood. Also, I loved the sephora near the wax museum, it’s so pretty! Oh, and the wax museum is a must see for me. I can’t get enough of wax figures. Was that creepy? Yes. Do I care? No.

[Reply]

take LOTS and LOTS of photos for us all ; )

[Reply]

I’ve never been! Have fun and ditto on the photos!

[Reply]

Have fun! I’ve never been….but I hear the strippers and buffets are great.
But unless you’re a 50+ male that might not be of interest……

Sorry I can’t help – but have fun!!

[Reply]

Have fun!! I’ve heard that Freemont Street off of the Strip is a LOT of fun

[Reply]

sooooooo last year, BFF went to a conference in vegas, and he hated every second of it. except this great sushi place they went to.

and of course, when i asked him today, he couldn’t remember the name of the place.

too much sake i surmise.

but have fun!! :)

i went to madame tussads in nyc and it was super fun — definitely check out the one in vegas!!

[Reply]

I got married in Vegas and LOVED it – the best thing we did, other than get married, as walk the strip. It’s LONG and if you make the wrong footwear decision then it hurts, but it was SO MUCH FUN to just walk the strip, checking out all the cool stuff like the fountains at the Bellagio, etc.

Also, the Freemont Street Experience is pretty neat and I would recommend that if you haven’t seen it before.

Take lots of pictures too!

[Reply]

Strippers.

[Reply]

jamie! eeeek! i just had my very first sin city experience, and it was a blast! seriously, the fountains at the bellagio were amazing, probably my favorite thing i saw out there. madame tussauds was pretty neat, it’s in the venician. there was a wax whoopi goldberg standing out front and it totally freaked me out. definitely walk through the palazzo, we stayed there… the shops were insane. barneys and jimmy choo were my faves. :o )

have a great time girl!!! can’t wait to hear all about it. xo

I have one of the best meals of my life at 9 in the Palms Hotel. You could do a whole night there, by doing dinner at 9 then hitting up Ghostbar on the roof or trying to get into the Playboy Club. I also loved shopping at the Forum Shops in Ceaser’s palace, and going out to Tao in the Venetian, which was very hip and trendy :)

Hope you have an amazing time!!!

[Reply]

VEGAS?? SO FUN! :)
I hope you have a great time!

Well, I am not sure how much money you are wanting to spend but something more on the pricey side is the PHANTOM OF THE OPERA VEGAS SPECTACULAR! ;) hehe. I mean, it’s got extra special vegas-style lights and stuff! >> http://www.phantomlasvegas.com .. I am a big fan of phantom and definitely take every opportunity to see it (it doesn’t come to la much here, you probably have it in chicago!) Another great show (i hear) is of course Cirque Du Soleil, can’t miss it! http://www.cirquedusoleil.com/

LOL i am the same way with my hair! ahhh, i am just not daring enough..probably cause it is SO final and permanent (until it grows out again of course) My hair is so long right now, just because I don’t know what to do with it!

Well have fun Jamie! Take lots of pics, you know your readers all want to see!

[Reply]

I’m with you, haircuts are scary. I just lopped off 10 inches…without bursting into tears like last time.

Hit up the buffet at the Mirage, take photos of the gorgeous lilies in the lobby and the too cute for words white tiger cubs. Also go see the Carnival in the Sky at the Rio. Everytime I go, it’s been closed but I hear it’s awesome.

[Reply]

there’s a pretty decent shopping centre thing inside the planet hollywood.

the the fountains at the bellagio… we got there just after one show finished, I think they run every 15 minutes, but we went up the escilators onto the covered walkway into the bellagio just as everyone was leaving from the last show, and we were in a perfect, slightly elevated, position to get nice photos. That’s my vegas tip.

We were also there about 7 weeks ago, and it was so hot the shoes we were wearing compressed on the sole from the heat coming up from the pavement… I dunno what it’s like now, but OH MAN was it hot.

A few people from our trip tried to get in to see Love at the Mirage, which is Cirque de soleil, and they couldn’t… so if you’re up for that, early is best!

[Reply]

OMG how was Vegas?! Please tell us!!! Seriously Vegas is one of my favorite places on earth. So jeal!
