Pickypicky is full of vintage inspired jewelry designs made with a mix of vintage, found and new materials. This is one of my favorite jewelry shops on etsy so I’m super excited about this feature!
Let’s hear from Sally who runs pickypicky designs.
Tell us about you and your shop?
I’ve had pickypicky for almost a year now in our little cottage in rainy Seattle…People sometimes contact me and ask me if my shop was named after Ramona Quimby’s cat. I was an avid reader when I was little and definitely obsessed with Beverly Cleary’s books. It wasn’t intentional, but, I like to believe that Ramona was in my head whispering “picky picky” to me in my subconscious. And that she then went off to hang out with Sheila the Great and raise some hell! I currently work full time in interior design but have been a jewelry & boutique buyer in the past. I have also worked in costume design, floral design, interior design, rare book buying…And studied mosaic, drawing, poetry, mixed media sculpture, creative writing. I’m obsessed with languages and travel. My dream is to spend 6 months of the year in the US and 6 months abroad, traveling, learning, making jewelry, living…
How did you get into making jewelry?
I have always been obsessed with jewelry. My mother had a dresser which she had converted into jewelry “drawers” so, it runs in the family! Growing up in New York, I worked for years at a boutique where I was also the buyer of jewelry, clothing, etc. And I started making jewelry to sell at the shop with beads, natural stones, seashells. And I was lucky to be surrounded by artists and writers growing up. In the last few years I would make things for myself and people would ask me where they could buy them, and eventually pickypicky was born!
What are your favorite materials to work with?
I love love love bright vintage plastics like Lucite and Bakelite! And I love finding vintage components and mixing them up. The hunt for supplies at flea markets, antique shops, estate sales can be as enjoyable as a finished piece. Over the last year I have been taking jewelry metal smithing classes and I love working with sterling and fine silver and playing with fire and metal. So far, I have been making things for myself and I’m not sure if I will eventually put these in my Etsy shop or on my own website which has yet to be set up~There just aren’t enough hours in the day to make everything I want to make and to do everything I want to do!!!
Are you pieces available in stores too?
I have some pieces at Banshee Clothing in Vancouver, BC and DoubleDutch Boutique in Baltimore, MD. A customer of mine actually wrote to me this week to let me know she is going to be featured in a book on fashion called “What I Wore Today: Fashion remixed online from Beijing to Berlin”. She is wearing one of my flying tiger necklaces with her outfit and looking stunning. What is your favorite item you have in your shop at the moment?
Well, I do like the Birds and the Bees necklace but, as a former-almost-French-major I love the French/English Love-o-meter. It hits all of my buttons: It’s big, movable, vintage-y, and has a sense of humor…!

Looking through her store, I was so surprised to find that I already own the French pendant! (Je t’aime plus qu’hier, moins que demain). My friend gave it to me as a gift, and now I know where she got it!

I love the owl Feather necklace. My aunt collected owls and we would kid her about all her owls but when she died and left everything to me I packed away most of the owls and kept a few for display and have never had the heart to get rid of them so I guess one more owl will be just what I need.

The little letter and purse necklace is adorable! But, if I won, I’d have to choose the PADLOCK HEART AND SKELETON KEY CHARM NECKLACE because my daughter loves anything with old keys on it. It would be a Christmas gift for her.
