This week we have etsy shop Cherry Creek Designs as our spotlight feature. I’m a big fan of simple jewelry and I think this shop has it down pat! My favorite are the Past, Present and Future bangles.
Tell us a little about you and your shop!
Well, about me, I am a mom to the most beautiful 4 year old ever! When she was born I really didn’t want to go back to my profession - I’m a culinary trained chef and the hours for that are just not family friendly. This started as an outlet for me to be creative. I took a jewelry class with my sister and I’ve been hooked ever since. I’ve done a lot of learning on my own through reading and trial and error but I’ve also taken a few classes on metalsmithing and enameling.
About my shop: I think I’m still trying to find my style but I want everything I make to be easy going and fun to wear and not get in the way of what you have to do everyday - like for me be a mom. We all lead busy lives and have limited budgets so I want to create pieces that have meaning for you and something you will want to wear everyday.
How did you get into jewelry making?
Well as I said earlier I’m a culinary trained chef and needed a creative outlet - I’m not sure if I chose jewelry or it chose me but I was hooked after the first class on stringing. I wasn’t satisfied with just stringing so I purchased a lot of magazines about how to make jewelry and found out about this amazing stuff called PMC. I started to look for classes in my area about this amazing material and found a class. I’ve been doing PMC for 4 years and was certified by the PMC Guild a year ago.
What kind of materials can we find in your jewelry?
I use PMC but I’ve taken classes in traditional metalsmithing so I combine the 2 together. I’ve taken a class in enameling and would like to start incorporating that into my work. I’ve been very busy lately - thank you to all my wonderful customers - so I haven’t had as much time to play. So that is something that you have to look forward to - enameling with new work.
I love gemstones so I would like to start incorporating more of them into my work as well.
Where do you get your inspiration from?
Well of course like most artist I get my inspiration from nature and life around me but I don’t think it can be as simple as that. I think my daughter has inspired me to look at something in such a different way that she has been a constant source of inspiration. When I first made the ‘wind’ earrings I knew I liked them but didn’t have a name for them, I showed them to her and I said what do you think? Well, mommy, that looks like the wind to me. I love to hear her view on new pieces that I make.
Sometimes ideas just won’t come to me so thats when I know I have to get out of my daily routine. I don’t always remember to do that but having a very curious little girl who loves to draw things for me is always a wonderful thing. I ask her to tell me about her picture and sometimes the ’story’ she tells me gives me an idea.
Its not easy to push yourself to try new things and get out of your comfort zone but that is something I’m working on so that my work can grow too.
What is your absolute favorite item in your shop right now?
I have to choose just one!? Okay well then the silver Plumeria ring and earrings. I grew up in Hawaii and the islands that I want to get back to will always win, hands down for me.
I like the heart pirate ring and earrings because they are just fun and my daughter likes them ‘because they’re spooky Mommy’.
I love making the hollow core beads that are reversible. I have lots of ideas for more along that line so stay tuned for some fun new things - if I ever get time to play!
