This week’s etsy adore feature and giveaway is from Honeylux. This is one of my favorite shops on etsy. I love the prints! My favorite is Black Day pictured below.
Tell us a little about you and your shop?
I started printing cards when I realized that letterpress is perfect for making small, affordable art prints available on a large scale. And I wanted to make something more casual, more accessible than fine art prints. When you present something as a fine art print, you usually have to make it a limited edition, which drives up the price. Then, of course, after someone buys this very limited, very expensive print, the last thing they are supposed to do is to write on it, stuff in an envelope and send it to a friend. That’s not much fun.
Also, when I shop for stationery for my own use, I like finding interesting blank cards – how many times have you picked up a really beautiful card, only to find that it has the words “Happy Birthday” pre-printed on it, when you wanted to use it for something else entirely? So art cards made sense to me.
Some of your work has a little bit of a darker feel to it. Where does your inspiration come from?
It’s amazing (with the hand note cards particularly) how many people interpret them literally, and see dismembered hands sewn together and severed heads, dripping blood. And they ARE meant to be unsettling, but in a much more vague, implied way.
When I first started printing the cards, I was scared that they would be too weird, too personal; I pictured my studio, decades from now, filled with towering stacks of unsold, unloved hand cards. And I do get that response from some retailers, a “Nobody’s going to buy this as a birthday card for Grandma” kind of thing, but overall I’ve been incredibly gratified at how people respond very strongly and personally to them.
I’ve also noticed you use hands in your work quite a bit – they are actually some of my favorites in your shop. Is there some significance in hands for you?
Not exactly. It was more accidental. I’ve always found drawing hands particularly challenging, so I thought it would be good for me to have to draw lots of them. Turns out there’s a lot of potential for expression in hands that I hadn’t realized. …mostly though, I just needed the practice.
Gradually hands became useful representations of specific people. The drawings on which the hand card series is based were inspired by anthropological relationship notations: those lineage charts with little symbols showing how people are bound together in society through the years, by marriage or blood or however. This art is a version of that scientific information; diagrams of personal relationships – the links between family, friends, lovers. It’s not random: there’s a very strict structure to the visual vocabulary of the string, the flowers, the sewing, etc.
Lastly, what is your favorite item in your store right now?
I still have a soft spot in my heart for the “lost at sea” card. It was so much fun to draw; all lace and forehead wrinkles. Terrible birthday card for Grandma, though.
Marina from Honeylux will be giving one lucky reader a framed print of their choice!

I loooooove the framed “Charmed, I’m sure” print. It suits me really well. All of these are wonderful. They do have a bit of a darker tinge to them, but it works very well!

I like the Poisontail print – truly symbolic and unusual! The white under the hand DOES make it look three-dimensional, and the “lines” to various profiles is almost like a very strange family tree!
