I know we are a little late starting up giveaways for 2009 but that’s okay, I have a great one this week to make up for the lateness. This week’s Etsy Adore feature is from KZM Facial Care Boutique. Karley use to sell on Etsy but since has moved to selling on her own site.
I actually have one of the products we are giving away this week so I can attest to how fantastic it is. The Goat’s Milk Facial Cream has been a staple in my skin care routine for the past few months. Karley took the time to answer a few questions so we could all get to know her and her products a little more. Check out what she has to say!
1) Tell us a little about you and your shop.
I’m a thirtysomething stay at home mom to two little boys, Nicholas and Benjamin. Nick’s 5 and in kindergarten. Ben is 3 and home with me. I own KZM Facial Care Boutique, a skin care line of handmade, toxin-free products. In October, my best-selling Goat’s Milk Facial Cream was featured as a recommended product in Martha Stewart’s Body + Soul magazine. I had been selling locally and on Etsy, but just launched my own separate site, kzmface.com.
I also have an Indie shopping magazine, Chic & Green, which can be found at kzmface.blogspot.com.
2) How did you get into making your own skin care products?
I have been interested in facial care for a good long time. In my “past life” pre-motherhood, I was a makeup artist and aesthetician. I have always had a love for this. When I was pregnant with our first child in 2003, I started studying the effects of toxins used in the cosmetics and toiletry industry on our bodies.
My older son, Nicholas, had severe eczema due to a cow’s milk allergy as a baby. I looked up some recipes on the net and in books and then tinkered with those–I made him soap and lotion from goat’s milk so I could see what was going on (and in) his skin.
Then my dad died of pancreatic cancer when I was pregnant with our second child. I started studying at great lengths the possible links between cancer and what goes into our skin.
3) You mentioned KZM is going even more green. How exactly are you doing that?
I recently eliminated all plastics from my shop, with the exception of one large jar used for a salt scrub since that could fall and break in the tub. I use amber glass for nearly everything I sell. Even though the plastics I was using were recyclable, many people still toss the bottles out. Given that I ship out several hundred bottles and jars per month, this has a cumulative effect and I want to make sure my company is doing its part to be green.
I also recycle packing peanuts and things like that. I get so many in boxes from suppliers that I just reuse those to pack.
KZM takes great care to ensure that we use recycled paper, phthalate free labels (our products have been phthalate free for a long time, but many people don’t realize labels often have this toxin in them), and biodegradable materials.
4) What is your favorite product in your shop?
You know, it used to be my Goat’s Milk Facial Cream. Right now, though, it has to be my Bee Glowing Firming Body Cream™. This cream is a goat’s milk, ultra rich paraben-free body cream with royal jelly, hyaluronic acid, royal jelly and Argan oil. It is absolutely divine. I make it with Buckwheat Honey from a local farm. It has Vanilla Absolute in it and a light almond all natural fragrance that make this just so luxurious. I slather it on at night!
5) Name 3 of your favorite etsy shops!
Only 3? That is so hard!
My number one is Aunt Nancy’s Handmade Soaps . Nancy makes these brilliant olive oil soaps that are just so creamy. Her soaps are palm oil-free, which is so important to me. Her peppermint cocoa bar is exquisite, as are the dozen or so other scents I have tried. She is a gem.
I also adore Mad City Soap . Sue, the owner, makes a Whipped Sugar Scrub which is really great for dry arms and legs. The Italian Cream Cake blended with Lemon Meringue is a MUST-TRY! Her whipped scrub is free of nasty chemicals and Sue is fun to talk to as well.
Lula Boutique is another favorite. Karen, the owner, makes the most beautiful vintage-inspired handmade jewelry. As I type this, I’m wearing a black rose ring she made and it is so well made and timeless!

I’ve used pure honey on my face (you can use your fingers to lift the skin a bit here and there from the stickiness….like a mini massage for your face), but never a scrub like this. It sounds fabulous!

Ever since I had my baby 2yrs ago, I have become super aware of things with toxins and anything else I don’t want in my body. This looks like an amazing line of products. My favorite would have to be the face cleansing oil paired with goats milk face cream. My sensitive skin clenser is still irritating my skin I think this is just what I have been looking for. Thnaks
